This website talks about how color theory is just that a theory. It is not proven like a law. Color theory can be broken down into three elements----the color wheel, color values, and color schemes.
On this website we learn that the color wheel was invented by Sir Isaac Newton. It's interesting to learn that the color wheel was invented by a scientist and not some artist. The primary colors on the wheel are red, yellow, and blue. These colors cannot be made by combining any other two colors.
Color value deals with the lightness or darkness of a color. Adding white to a color produces tints while adding black to a color produces shades.
The site also gives a good breakdown of color schemes. This is a must read for all art students.
